The Contrast. I like multi-day runs. Primarily for the reason that you get to explore the cities and the landscapes in between on your feet, and you get to meet amazing people, hear their stories and tell some of yours. The last time when I did something like that was in 2017 when I ran from Quebec City to Montreal. I started that on the back of finishing three ultramarathons in three months already, including Beast of Burden 100 miles and Actif Epica, both finished three weeks apart. The logistics were planned months in advance, I knew beforehand where I was going to stop every single night, how much distance I was going to cover on each day and what were the important checkpoints. With planned stops and pre-defined distance, life gets a bit easier when you are on the move. However, six years later, this multi-day run was a complete contrast. There was no plan. I was not as fit to begin with, so, I knew it would take longer. There was no predefined distance for any day, I didn't know where I was going to sleep, if at all, and had no idea where the next meal would be possible. Everything was decided on the go, in the moment, hence, it was a logistical nightmare. So much, that at one stage, there was one refill point in 97 km. One. And this shows in the numbers. It is said, in the ultrarunning, it's not the distance, but time spent on feet that matters. The number crunching continues. When I started the Big Birthday Bash on July 31, nearly three weeks ago, I wanted to record the entire distance of 358 km as a single activity. I thought, it would look cool. Mainly because when I ran 375 km in 2017, there were no traces of that besides the Airbnb and Couchsurfing reviews left by my hosts; and Google Location history of the phone I borrowed from my roommate for that week. However, I was so tormented by the time I reached the 127 km point, the only things I remembered to charge was my phone and GPS trackers. The power-bank I was carrying died the next morning due to my mishandling in the rain, and as expected, on the third day, my Garmin ran out of power, and I couldn't save it. However, Garmin Connect auto-saved the activity, so I have the data, with some part missing. In April this year, after struggling with another bout of the eating disorder, I chose to pull myself back up and started with a daily step goal of 8000 steps a day. And gradually moved to 18,000. On one of those days, it was already late evening, I was in downtown, it was raining heavily, and I was worried about missing my step goal. So, I chose to go for a walk in the south of Oslo. While walking there, I saw a road sign that read "E6, Gothenburg," and I laughed to myself, "how cool would it be, if I could run from Gothenburg to Oslo one day, before I leave Norway next year." And since then, I had not been able to keep that thought out of my head. But I was failing to run even a mile then. By June, I had built up my endurance enough to start planning a 10K. But, goal was still far away. And then one night, I pulled the plug! 10 years ago, around this time, I left my home in Delhi on a journey that took me places. Quite literally. It's been a decade of being away from family, all by myself. At that time, I didn't know that I would possibly never return. Besides other stuff that I have spoken about time to time, in this while, I ran through the states/territories of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Meghalaya, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Daman, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in India; Newfoundland, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Manitoba and New Brunswik in Canada; New York, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio, Vermont, Maine in the USA; Oslo, Viken, and Tomso and Finnmark in Norway; and various parts of Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Austria, Czech, Luxembourg, Netherlands and Belgium. The experience of exploring the beaches, ice-capped mountains, deserts, lush green forests, raging river valleys, dead plains, plateaus, some hidden villages, wetlands, extreme rugged landscapes, frozen landscapes, coastal trails and prairies was immensely absorbing, humbling and satisfying, which was my real school in the past 35 years of existence. Tomorrow morning, I’ll start another, nearly 360 km long, from one country to the other, on foot. First time running across an international border. I wanted this to be at the Indo-Pak border, but our neighbors never responded. Anyway, gratitude towards all who have been a key part of this journey: the sun, moon, rocks, grass, trees, dogs, birds, camels, the local wildlife and yeah, some humans!
